What is the difference between standard and non-standard poe switches?

POE refers to the transmission of data signals for some IP-based terminals (such as IP phones, wireless LAN access point APs, network cameras, etc.) without making any changes to the existing Ethernet Cat.5 cabling infrastructure. At the same time, the technology that can also provide DC power for such devices is a switch that supports Power over Ethernet.

1. What is standard and non-standard POE switch?

The port output power of POE can reach 15.4W or 30W, which conforms to the IEEE802.3af/802.3at standard. Different standards have different output power. For example: IEEE802.3af can not exceed 15.4W at most. Due to the loss of transmission wire, it can supply power to devices whose maximum power consumption does not exceed 12.95W. POE switches that follow the IEEE802.3at standard can supply power to devices with a maximum power consumption of no more than 25W. Therefore, under different standards, POE switches can accept different numbers of PDs, and the total power of POE power supply must be considered. Therefore, what kind of POE switch is selected can be selected according to the power of the monitoring device.

2. What is the difference between standard and non-standard POE switches?

The standard POE switch has a built-in POE control chip. After the device is connected, before the power supply starts, it will output a small voltage to detect the power receiving device. After there is no problem, the POE switch starts to supply power to the PD device from the low voltage until the stable transmission. If the device is disconnected from the network, the POE switch will quickly stop supplying power to the device and repeat the detection process to detect whether the end of the cable is connected to the device. Therefore, if the POE power supply module fails, all cameras will not work.

Non-standard POE switches have potential safety hazards. They do not detect powered devices and output voltage and current directly, resulting in excessive instantaneous voltage, which is easy to burn out powered devices and even cause fires.

Summary: In recent years, with the rapid development of POE power supply technology, its advantages are prominent: stable power supply, safety, energy saving, convenient management, etc., and it has become the new darling of the security industry. The network monitoring project is different from the ordinary network integrated wiring. The data transmission volume is very large, the power is high, and it requires uninterrupted work around the clock. The use of quality-assured POE equipment and wires is the guarantee of the stability of the entire system. There are many types of POE switches. If you want to choose a suitable switch, you need to consider comprehensively.
